Bay full of moored boats below dry savannah hills

Sea conditions

Calm bay, real current at the drop-offs.

Visibility, current, water temperature, and the conditions that get a boat day cancelled.

In short

Riung's bay is sheltered and generally calm; the current worth respecting is at the reef drop-offs, and the season decides visibility more than anything else.

  • Best visibility June to September.
  • Water sits around 27–29°C year-round.
  • Swell, not wind, is what cancels the day.

In the water

Three things to read before you jump in

None of this is dramatic. All of it is worth knowing.

Visibility

Good to excellent June–September on calm mornings. Runoff and swell cut it sharply from December.

Dense hard coral on a shallow reef

Current

Mild over the flats, noticeable at the edges. Swim with it, not against it, and stay with the boat.

Temperature

Roughly 27–29°C all year. No wetsuit needed; a rash vest is for sun, not cold.

Cancellations

The captain decides, and that is correct

Small wooden boats do not go out in swell. If a captain cancels, the sea is worse than it looks from the harbour, which is sheltered.

You do not pay for a day that does not sail. This is the argument for a third night in Riung.
