The park

A tourism park, not a national park. The difference shows.

Official designation, area, zoning and management — the facts other pages about Riung tend to guess at.

In short

Taman Wisata Alam Laut 17 Pulau is a 7,303.16-hectare protected area on the north coast of Flores, managed by Balai Besar KSDA NTT under a 2014 ministerial decree.

  • 7,303.16 ha, roughly 48.93% of it water.
  • Designated by SK No. 3911/MENHUT-VII/KUH/2014.
  • A different agency from Komodo National Park.

The record

Three facts worth citing correctly

Each of these has a source. Where one does not, we say so.

Wooden jetty over clear turquoise water

The area

7,303.16 hectares under the 2014 collective designation. About 48.93% of that is water.

The island count

Sources list twenty to twenty-four islands and reefs. "Seventeen" is understood locally as a reference to 17 August.

Why the category matters

Lighter protection, thinner resourcing

A Taman Wisata Alam Laut is a tourism-oriented conservation category. Komodo is a national park with its own authority, its own budget and its own published tariff.

That gap explains most of what frustrates researchers here: fewer surveys, no tariff sheet, and monitoring that depends on a handful of camera traps.
