A wooden charter boat moored on mirror-flat water

Day trip

One day is enough to see it. It is not enough to arrive.

What a single day on the water at Riung contains — and why almost nobody manages it as an actual day trip.

In short

A Riung day trip means chartering a wooden boat at the harbour, visiting three to five islands for snorkelling and beach time, and being back between 15.00 and 16.00.

  • Priced per boat for the day, or per seat if you join another party.
  • Three to five stops, out at 08.00.
  • You still need to sleep in Riung the night before.

The day

Three to five stops, in this shape

Routes vary with weather and captain, but the rhythm is consistent.

The reef stops

Two or three shallow flats. Pulau Bampa is the most consistently recommended for clear water on calm mornings.

Lunch on sand somewhere out of the wind. Usually the longest stop of the day.

The catch

There is no day trip from anywhere

The road in is three hours from Bajawa at best, and the boat leaves at eight. A genuine day trip from another town does not work.

What people mean by "day trip" here is one boat day, with a night in Riung either side of it.
