A phinisi under sail at sunset on flat water

Phinisi

A crewed wooden schooner, priced per night and per boat.

What a phinisi charter actually costs for a Flores trip, what is included, and whether it ever touches Riung.

In short

A phinisi is a traditional Indonesian wooden schooner chartered whole-boat, crewed and catered, priced per night rather than per person — and almost every fleet is based in Labuan Bajo, not Riung.

  • Whole boat, crew and meals included.
  • Priced per night, so group size decides value.
  • Based in Labuan Bajo; Riung is an added leg.

What you get

Three things the price covers

Beyond that, cabin count and standard vary enormously between vessels.

The vessel

A wooden schooner, typically four to eight cabins. The hull shape is traditional; the fit-out ranges from simple to genuinely luxurious.

Crew and catering

Captain, deckhands, a cook and usually a guide. Meals aboard are part of the charter, not an extra.

The itinerary

Usually three or four nights inside Komodo. Reaching Riung means a long coastal leg and considerably more nights.

Does it stop at Riung

Rarely, and never as a standard route

Phinisi itineraries are built around Komodo, which is where the fleet is based and where the guests want to go. Riung is 340 km east of that.

A charter can be routed there, but it means several extra days at sea and a price to match. For most people the boat day at Riung is arranged locally instead.
