Snorkeller floating above a shallow reef in clear water off Flores

Snorkelling

Shallow, warm, and quiet enough to hear your own breathing.

The reef stops worth asking for by name, what gear the boats actually carry, and why this is not a diving destination.

In short

Riung is a snorkelling destination — shallow reef flats with good visibility in the dry season, reached on the same day boat that does the island-hopping.

  • 183 coral species and 306 reef fish recorded in the park.
  • Best visibility June to September.
  • No dive centre, no compressor, no rental shop.

What you actually see

Honest expectations. This is good reef, not world-class reef.

Turtles and rays

Both are seen, neither is guaranteed. Anyone promising mantas at Riung is describing Komodo.

Best June to September. Wet-season swell and runoff cut it sharply from December.

Gear

Bring your own mask

Boats commonly carry masks and snorkels, occasionally fins. Sizes are limited and condition varies, and a mask that leaks ruins the whole day.

A mask packs small and costs little. It is the single best thing to bring for this trip.
